Oregon Craft Beer – Still Room to Grow

Is the Oregon brewing industry over saturated?  NO!

According to this article on Oregon Live and the supporting research from the Oregon Employment Department, there is still room to grow for people that produce good quality beer.

With 188 licensed breweries in Oregon, the industry seems huge.  But, as the report points out, only 5,127 people actually work in this industry.  As with many other industries, there are a handful of very large players, but they are followed by many, many more very small producers.  The competition is forcing everyone to step up their game.  Just showing up with another hoppy IPA isn’t going to cut it anymore.  Brewers are being forced to find their specific area of expertise and stick to it.  Some choose a very tight geographic area and try to be the brewpub of choice for the neighborhood.  Some find a specialty type of beer and become the expert in that product.

Regardless of how they do it, the industry has grown to the point that everyone has to get back to basics – the basics of business, which require that you do something besides provide a ‘me too’ product with average service.

Only the strong and smart producers will thrive in this market and that is great news for our customers for us as Craft Beer lovers.

Make the Best of Product Name Conflicts

This is a wonderful story about a brewer that turned a conflict into a huge PR opportunity.

The story was reported recently on NPR and is worth reading.  Basically this small brewer named a beer after a popular Starbucks drink, thinking the coffee giant would never find out or care — there really isn’t much chance someone would confuse a pint of beer with a coffee drink, but Starbucks didn’t see it that way.

Instead of ‘lawyering up’ and putting himself out of business, this clever small business owner used it as an opportunity.  The attached story is long, but it is well worth the time to read it.  It is funny, but also a good reminder about thinking outside the box and taking an unconventional approach to problem solving.

We can’t thank you enough for all your hard work.  We are looking forward to working with you on the next three new labels that are still in the design phases.  Have a wonderful rest of your week and as we raise our glass and cheers, you and your staff will be in our foremost thoughts and gratitude. –Beth  and Dennis, winery from Tri-Cities, WA

Government Shutdown Hurts our Customers!

This is bad news for us and our customers – the TTB shutdown is increasing the already-long lead times for new label approval, according to BeerPulse.com

The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) regulates alcoholic beverages. As we were quick to point out both last week and on Monday, the government shutdown has left the TTB without funding to carry on regulatory activities. Two of those activities are issuance of brewers notices for new breweries opening up (which we won’t get into in this post) and issuance of approvals for new alcoholic beverage labels intended to be sold across state lines.
