Moving Forward – Staying Strong

Labelexpo_Americas_2014_logo_horizontal_white

We have been very blessed at Rose City Label the past few years as more and more customers trust us with their label business.  We need to earn and re-earn that trust every day, and part of that is our obligation to responsibly stay in step with current technology and innovation. To that end, we journey to Chicago every two years to preview the new and exciting developments in printing, cutting, and stamping equipment.  This is the mecca of label equipment where all the heavy hitters gather to compare notes and keep in touch with the future.

This year was no exception – many new innovations, many new companies, and many new printing devices.  Digital printing is hot and getting hotter.  The energy at the show was electric – just as our company has grown and prospered the past few years, so has the whole industry.  People are excited and ready to invest – they are moving forward, just like us.

In the next few weeks you will see more and more posts about the future plans for Rose City Label.  We know we need to invest in order continue to meet customer needs – there are so many options – the choices are endless.  We will make some decisions soon, and we will keep you posted about what you can expect from us in the new year and years beyond.

Stay tuned – and thank you, all of you, for your confidence and trust.  Your business allows us to profitably lead our company into the future – without you, we have no capital to invest with and nobody to invest for.  Stay tuned – the future is bright and are glad you are a part of it.

WMaGL? What Makes a Great Label? Part 1

What Makes a Great Label?

What do you need to look for in a vendor to provide this great label?

In this blog series, we will examine the many attributes of a truly great label.  We will look at all the elements that we, as label professionals, look for in a label project:

1. Authentic branding and design to reflect your company mission, vision and vibe

2. Cost effective production strategy – colors, materials, quantity

3. Functional application – fitness for use as directed

4, Happy Customer-  in the end, you are the ultimate person we try to please

Part 1 – Authentic Branding and Design (adapted from an article submitted to Oregon Beer Growler, September 2014)

Based on the thousands of label designs we have seen, people are always asking for our input about label designs. May answer is always the same – it has to match your authentic brand. Your entire business needs to have a cohesive and unified brand image – really the DNA or the ‘soul’ of the business. Every business has one, and it is up to the leader to closely guard, protect, and cultivate that brand. Once this brand is clearly defined, the website, the on-premise decor, the signage, and the labels should all flow directly from this core. That is what makes a great label design – a consistent look and feel that replicates the feeling of being in your pub in person. Some are upscale and polished – some are hand crafted and rustic – neither of these is right or wrong, it just has to be consistent to reinforce your brand image.

This is where it starts – the very first part of ‘What Makes a Great Label?’ – Begin with the brand.  Stay tuned for the next installment – by the end you will have all of the elements and you can truly have a Great Label.

Ask for what you want! Recycle what you can

Recycle

At one of our quarterly Eco-Meetings we got a great suggestion from one of our team members.  He complained about what a pain it is to recycle your plastic grocery bags at the grocery store.  (** Sidebar for out of town readers – in Portland you can’t recycle plastic grocery bags at the curb like paper, plastic, glass and many other items — you have to take them back to the grocery store).  He asked if we could find a way to recycle these here — especially since we were recycling the stretch film that wraps all the pallets of paper we get each week.

With that question in mind, I called our Clackamas County recycling guru, Shannon, and asked the question.  Much to my surprise and happiness, he said we COULD recycle it with our stretch film — all we had to do was bag it up and put it in with our corrugated recycling.  Wow!  Now we have a designated recycle bin for plastic bags and many people, including me, use it each week.  You never know until you ask!  This great suggestion helped us start a program that is more convenient for employees (making them more likely to recycle more) and helps all of us to keep our ‘green focus’ at the front of our minds.

NOTE — your mileage may vary…  Please call your local trash and recycle company to find out their specific requirements.  I found out recently that even within Portland, different areas are served by different private trash hauling companies, and they can each set their own rules about what they do and don’t take in their recycle pick up.  But don’t be afraid to ask!  You never know what you may be able to recycle.
