New Apple IPA from Harvester Brewing

Fall is almost here and it’s personally my favorite time of year for beer and cider.  Harvester Brewing is releasing a new Experimental Ale, Apple IPA.  For those of you who are not familiar with Harvester Brewing, they are a gluten free brewery located in Southeast Portland.  Using as many local ingredients as they can, Harvester Brewing provides a wide variety of flavors, all gluten free.  Stop by their headquarters on Thursdays from 3:30-6:00 p.m. for a tasting.  Cheers!

Beer Economy is Strong

A recent article in the Portland Business Journal had some pretty amazing statistics about our local craft beer scene:

  • The Economic Impact of the Beer industry in Oregon is $2.83 Billion Dollars
  • We have more craft breweries per capita than any state except Vermont
  • Nearly half of Oregon-made beer is consumed here

The article also has great insight about the troubles our large brewers will have to grow their distribution footprint.  Since Oregon isn’t exactly in the center of the United States, shipping is a big factor.  The option taken by some growth players – to add contract brewing in the Midwest and East Coast isn’t a strategy many will consider.  The quality control of making your own beer in your own facility is important to our top brewers.  And, the access to fresh Oregon hops and clear, pure water are two big things that keep our local beer local.  With so many Craft Beer drinkers in the local area, most will never have to expand beyond our great state.  Cheers!

What is a keyline and why we use them

Even the greatest pressman can battle with registration on the press.

What happens when misregistration occurs and you have type on your label? Your text becomes “fuzzy” and hard to read.

How do you avoid this? Add a keyline.

A keyline, in graphic design, is a boundary line that separates color and monochromatic areas or differently colored areas of printing on a given page or other printed item. The line itself, usually consisting of a black (or other dark colored) border, provides an area in which lighter colors can be printed with slight variation in registration. It keeps type looking “clean” as we say and is usually not even noticeable.

A Different QR code on EACH Label!

This is another great example of a label we weren’t sure we could make.  We get many of our best ideas from our customer requests — they push us to do things we didn’t know we could do, and the results are very exciting.  In this case, we have a unique QR code on EACH label.  This allows the customer to track the model and serial number of each product, expedite the product registration, and streamline any repair or recall in the future.

The key to this is having a very sophisticated website with a unique landing page for each instance of your product.  Once that is done on the back end, Rose City Label can create and print the variable QR code to direct your customer to their personal landing page.  Remember, QR codes can also be used to send an email, SMS text message, or refer the person to any other web based landing page that you choose.  If there is a destination to send them, we can get them there with a custom QR code — even if it is a different code on each label!

Variable Barcode Parking Passes

Rose City Label is proud to print for some of Portland’s most prestigious companies and organizations.  This project for the Multnomah Athletic Club is no exception.  This club has been a part of the fabric of Portland life for generations.  When they needed an upgrade to their parking control labels, they knew who to call.

This label was very challenging because it needed many things all on one label:

  • Easy to scan bar code when product is issued to the member
  • Visually readable number for parking garage staff
  • Tamper proof die cut
  • Low Tack Window Cling Adhesive

Because the bar code and the human readable number on the actual label had to match, we had to invest in some additional software to print both numbers at the same time.  And, the second number had to be mirror image (backwards) so it can be read properly through the car windshield.  All of these elements made this a challenging, rewarding job for Rose City Label.
