What Are Bleeds?

When the image prints to the edge of the label it is called a bleed.  On a press, the artwork is printed on rolls of paper and then die cut out to size.  If you do not allow for a 1/16 of an inch bleed, any misalignment  will result with the artwork not running to the edge of the cut.   This means a hairline white edge can appear where there should be no white edge at all.  Building your files 1/6″ larger than the final trim size guarantees that images truly will go all the way to the edge of the printed paper.

If you have any questions about bleeds or how to build bleeds in your artwork contact our Graphics Department.

Organic Claims on your Beverage Label – Helpful tips

Organic foods and beverages continue to be a growing, high margin category in almost every retail store.  Many of our customers are in this product category and we love to help them with labels.  There are, however, many additional tricks and traps required when you want to claim ‘organic’ status for your product.  The links below provide many helpful examples and resources for you.

Background

In 2000, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) finalized the regulations relating to the National Organic Program (NOP) at 7 CFR Part 205. These rules provide new standards for the production, handling, processing, labeling, and marketing of products labeled with organic claims. While these rules were not written or implemented by TTB, they do apply to alcohol beverages. For this reason, TTB has worked closely with USDA to ensure that the alcohol beverage industry has current and accurate information regarding organic claims on labels.

Organic Labeling Resources

Label approvals and legal requirements are always the responsibility of the customer — we don’t provide legal advice, but we can provide resources, examples, and experience to help you through the process.  Please call us today to see if we can help you navigate this area and bring your products to market with a beautiful, legal label.  We look forward to helping you.

Beautiful Cost Effective Wine Label

This beautiful 2 Color label was a perfect way for our good customer, Lachini Vineyards, to extend their product line without diluting their main premium wine brand, they wanted to create a secondary label that was very distinct from the look and feel of their main product line.

This wine will be sold for a much lower price point, so the label also had to be cost effective.  With a very simple, understated design, combined with the embossing effect, all parties were pleased with the end result.  This label will cost about half of what the standard premium wine label costs, but it still has a very eye-catching look that will help the wine stand out on the shelf.

Creative solutions are what we do best at Rose City Label — give us a challenge and we will meet it for you.  If you want to extend your product line – either up or down the quality scale – we can help you with a design and printing method to meet all your marketing goals.

Picking the Right Material

One of the first decisions a label buyer needs to make is the material their label will print on.  Part of this decision is obviously a stylistic and art-based decision, but there are also performance issues to consider.  The label has to hold up and perform the task it is designed for.  Helping you decide what material is best for your project, at the most affordable price, is one of the things we do best at Rose City Label.

Think about these items when you pick your material:

1. Application Temperature.  How warm (or cold) is the product when the label is applied?

2. Service Temperature Range.  What temperature variations will the product experience?

3. Dispensing Method. Hand applied? Machine applied?

4. Product applied to.  Glass bottle? Paper box? Poly bag?  What does the label stick to?

5. Printing Process.  Flexographic (traditional)? Digital? Thermal Transfer?

6. Environment.  Is the label getting wet? Scuffed? Direct sunlight? Indoor? Outdoor?

7. Useful life.  Single serve container? Gallon? Used for a year? For a single day event?

Think about these seven questions when you are selecting your label material.  Knowing the answer to all of these will help us to find the right label material to meet all your needs.
